The tester operates on the principle of a bi-directional pendulum weighing system. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of the testing process:
A rectangular specimen (typically 1.5 inches wide by 2.75 inches long) is clamped vertically at one end.
The free end of the specimen is positioned between a pair of rollers attached to a rotating disk.
The disk rotates at a constant speed, causing the rollers to push against the specimen and deflect it from its vertical position.
As the specimen bends, it causes the pendulum to deflect from its center. The pendulum applies an increasing torque to the specimen.
When the specimen is deflected to a predetermined angle (usually 7.5° or 15°), the bending moment is measured. The test is performed in both the left and right directions, and the readings are averaged to determine the material's stiffness.
The result is a quantitative value of the material's resistance to bending.
