A digital pull-off strength tester, also known as a digital pull-off adhesion tester, is a specialized instrument used to measure the tensile strength or adhesion of a coating, a layer of material, or a repair to its substrate. It is a portable, hand-operated device that applies a perpendicular pulling force to a prepared surface and displays the force required to detach it on a digital screen.
A pull-off test measures the tensile bond strength between a material and its substrate. It determines how much force (in N or MPa) is required to detach or "pull off" a disc glued to the surface.

In some cases, a core may be drilled around the dolly to isolate the test area, especially on materials like concrete or mortar.
Curing : The adhesive is allowed to cure fully, creating a strong bond between the dolly and the surface.
Attachment : The tester is attached to the dolly. Many testers have a self-aligning feature to ensure the pulling force is applied at a perfect 90-degree angle to the surface, which is crucial for accurate results.
Testing : The operator gradually applies a pulling force, often by rotating a hand wheel or using a hydraulic pump. The instrument's internal load cell measures the force being applied.
Failure and Measurement : The force is increased until the adhesion fails, and the dolly pulls off the surface. The tester's digital display records and holds the maximum force value at the moment of failure.
Analysis : The recorded force value, along with the size of the dolly, is used to calculate the pull-off strength, which is typically expressed in pressure units like MPa (megapascals) or psi (pounds per square inch). The weakest point of the system (dolly, adhesive, coating layers, or substrate) will be where the fracture occurs.
