The basic principle of a shredder involves a set of rotating blades or cutters mounted on one or more shafts. As material is fed into the machine, these blades tear, cut, or crush it into smaller fragments. The specific mechanism depends on the type of shredder and the material being processed:

Shearing Action : Many shredders, especially for paper and light materials, use a shearing action. Rotating blades pass very close to a set of fixed blades, much like a pair of scissors, to slice the material.

Tearing and Crushing : For tougher or bulkier materials, such as plastics, rubber, or metal, the machine uses a more aggressive tearing and crushing action. The rotating shafts with teeth or claws pull the material in and break it apart.

Screening : Many industrial shredders are equipped with a screen or sieve beneath the cutting unit. This screen ensures that all material is processed to a consistent, desired size before it can exit the machine. Any pieces that are still too large are re-circulated through the cutting chamber.
