How it Works :
- X-ray Excitation : The EDXRF analyzer directs a primary X-ray beam (generated by an X-ray tube) at the sample.
- Electron Displacement : When these high-energy primary X-rays strike an atom in the sample, they can dislodge an electron from one of its inner orbital shells. This creates an unstable, excited state in the atom.
- Fluorescence Emission : To regain stability, an electron from a higher energy outer shell drops down to fill the vacancy in the inner shell. As this electron falls to a lower energy state, it emits a secondary X-ray photon, known as a fluorescent X-ray.
- Characteristic X-rays : The energy of this fluorescent X-ray is unique and characteristic to the specific element from which it originated. Each element has its own "fingerprint" of characteristic X-ray energies.
- Energy Dispersive Detection : An energy-dispersive detector (often a Silicon Drift Detector, SDD) simultaneously collects all the emitted fluorescent X-rays from the sample. This detector can differentiate between the X-rays based on their energy levels.

Spectrum Analysis : The detector sends signals to a multi-channel analyzer and software, which creates an X-ray spectrum. This spectrum plots the intensity of the X-rays against their energy. The energy of a peak identifies the element, and the intensity (height) of the peak is proportional to the concentration of that element in the sample.
