1. Pull-Off Test (Binder Bond Strength - BBS Test) :
- This is a widely used method, particularly for asphalt binders.
- A pull-out stub is adhered to the binder (which is on a solid substrate).
- A tensile force is applied to the stub perpendicular to the surface until failure occurs.
- The test quantifies the tensile force required to remove the stub, providing a measure of bond strength.
- The mode of failure (adhesive, cohesive within the binder, or cohesive within the substrate) is also observed.
- The "Pneumatic Adhesion Tensile Testing Instrument (PATTI)", often used in conjunction with the BBS test, applies a pneumatic load.
- Standards like "AASHTO T 361" incorporate the BBS test.
- This is a simpler, empirical test often used for bitumen-aggregate systems.
- Aggregates coated with the binder are immersed in water (often at an elevated temperature).
- After a specified period, the percentage of stripping (uncovered aggregate area) is visually estimated.
- It helps classify aggregates as hydrophilic (lose coating in water) or hydrophobic (retain coating).
- A modified version can measure mass loss due to moisture conditioning of a loose hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture.

- Bitumen-coated aggregate stones are subjected to mechanical abrasion under water in a rolling bottle.
- The residual coating on the aggregate is visually assessed after a set time (e.g., 6 or 24 hours).

- A grid pattern is cut through the coating into the substrate.
- Adhesive tape is then applied over the grid and rapidly removed.
- Adhesion is visually assessed based on how much of the coating is removed within the cut area (e.g., using ISO or ASTM classifications).
- Also for coatings, this test involves guiding a weighted pin or chisel against the coated panel until the paint layer detaches from the substrate.
- The adhesion is primarily evaluated visually.

- Measures the contact angle of a binder droplet on a substrate surface.
- A smaller contact angle generally indicates better wetting and thus better adhesion.
7. Dynamic Immersion/Wheel Tracking Tests (e.g., Hamburg Wheel-Track Device Test - AASHTO T 324) :
- While not a direct adhesion test in the same way as a pull-off test, these tests evaluate the moisture sensitivity and rutting resistance of compacted asphalt mixtures, which are strongly influenced by binder - aggregate adhesion. They simulate traffic loading under wet conditions.

- Steel ball weighing 512 g
- Metallic base with three
- vertical support points and metallic rod 500 mm high

- rubber lined with lead shots ballast.
